Last week I finally got to see The Expendabels 2 in theatre and I was amazed as well as I was amused. The action was amazing. A little less bloody than it was in the first one but none the less pretty damn cool. The jokes worked even better. But one thing really botherd me. They kept saying again and again how old the plane they were on was. And it didn’t look that old to me. So I did some research that I will now present to you. A battle of age. Men versus flying machines.
Sylvester Stallone VS. the Grumman HU-16 Albatros
Sylvester Stallone was born on july 6th 1946 in New York City. The Prototype of the Albatros had its first flight on the 24th of october 1947. Which makes the Albatros at least a year younger than Stallone. But the industrial production of the Albatros took place from 1949 to 1954. So there is a chance that the plane we saw in the first Expendables Movie is actually 9 years younger than its pilot.
ROUND 1: STALLONE IS DEFINITLY OLDER
Arnold Schwarzenegger VS. Canadair CL-215
Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on the 30th of july 1947 in Austria. The plane he has to fight is the Canadair CL-215, which was the plane of the Expendables in their second movie until Stallone decided it was a bright idea to crush it into a mine shaft ( what the fuck dude? ).
The Protytype had its first flight at october 23th, 1967. The Production lastet from 1969 to 1990. This plane is mostly used by firefighters because it can fill itself with lakewater while swimming in the lake and release the water by flying over a burning forest or town or… aircraft carrier or something like that. You get the idea. However for the movie they replaced that feature with a bombshaft so they could drop a chinese businessman attached to Jet Li. Which is pretty cool to I guess. They also put a ridiculously huge gun in the front of the plane. None the less. Arnold is at least 20 years older than that plane.
ROUND 2: SCHWARZENEGGER IS WAY OLDER
Bruce Willis VS. Antonov AN2 “COLT”
Bruce Willis was born march 19th, 1955 in Idar-Oberstein (Germany). Hey… Bruce Willis is only 5 years older than my dad. That’s old, but not as old as the two other action guys who still have all their hair. Weird. The plane he has to face is the Antonov AN2 (Natocodename: COLT (that’s a pretty sweet codename)). We don’t get to see this plane until the Expendables 2 is almost over. It’s a gift for Stallone from Willis. And a pretty cool one I might add. I want a gift like that for the next time I kill Jean-Claude van Damme… back to the actual topic. The Prototype of the COLT had it’s first flight august 31st, 1947. Wow, do you realize what that means? Bruce Willis is the first one who is actually younger than the prototype of the plane he is up against. But wait… the COLT was produced from 1947 till 1992. That’s a long ass time. Up to 18,000 of these planes were built in that time. The Grumman HU-16 Albatros and the Canadair CL-215 combined only reach a built number of 584 ( Albatros: 459 / Canadair: 125 ).
So all in all it is safe to say that Bruce Willis is younger than the prototype but it’s not sure if he is younger than the plane used in the movie.
ROUND 3: BRUCE WILLIS MAY BE OLD, BUT NOT AS OLD AS YOU THINK
I think it’s safe to say that both the actors and the planes represent milestones in their worlds. I myself can’t wait for the Expendables 3. What kind of plane are they going to use in that movie… I hope for a C-47 Skytrain or a B-17 flying fortress. But keeping the COLT would be totally cool as well.
I hoped you enjoyed this little “battle” of mine. If you ever need information regarding planes I can recommend the VIRTUAL AIRCRAFT MUSEUM.
